“I want ice cream, but I shouldn’t have that!”

Just like pizza, donuts, fries etc. You can enjoy ice cream, lose weight and be healthy! No feelings of guilt needed. It is all about finding balance with your favorite foods.

Instead of plating a large portion of ice cream, focus on a more nutrient rich balanced combination.

Take this featured image of peaches and ice cream as an example. See how the focus is on the peaches?! It was enjoyed with just one spoonful of vanilla bean ice cream so the sweet, juicy, freshness of the peach stood out and the nutrient rich calories of the peach outweighed the empty calories from added sugar and fat in the ice cream.

If you just want ice cream alone and no fruit, then aim to keep total calories, specifically the empty calories, within a reasonable range and simply focus on purely enjoying the ice cream. Consider skipping extras like the cone or toppings.

I have two go-to mantras that I commonly share with foods that are higher in fat and/or added sugar like ice cream:

  1. “Sharing is caring.”  Helpful with foods like french fries, but can also work for ice cream! This not only helps with moderation for yourself, but you are also helping out the person you are sharing with by decreasing the amount of empty calories for them.
  2. “Some is better than none.” Going for the smallest size available is a helpful consideration. Maybe even kids size!

Ideas Having Ice Cream At Home:

  • Couple the ice cream with fresh fruit! Choose fruits that are in-season for the most nutritious and sweetest! One of my go-to ways is to warm the fruit (e.g., blackberries, peaches, pears, apples, etc.) in a skillet and have a scoop of ice cream on top.
  • Halo Top ice cream brand.
  • Make banana ice cream (recipe below).
  • Frozen Cool Whip is always a great alternative when portioned in moderation… compliments of my momma on that one 😉.
