A big part of living with chronic pain is learning to find the space to be with it. If it is not going anywhere today then how do we find a way to be okay with that and just sit with it and let it be. It tends to soften at least with time, if not pass completely. We just have to get there.

There are a lot of ways to find space along our journey to healing and each of us needs different resources, tools, and people in our lives to help create and find this space. Once we find it we have to nurture that space and harvest what it gives us. From there we can truly start to heal.

This is where having a set of tools to help with our day to day and having a team of practitioners and healers can come in hand and be essential. We can’t do it alone. That’s life. We have to ask for and find the right help to get us to where we need to be so we can breathe amongst the pain. So we can come up for air and actually heal.

There are a lot of approaches to creating what I call “space” – from mindfulness, to support groups, to bodywork, to acupuncture, to making sure our body is being fed what it needs and hydrated and on and on and on. It is a holistic process of balance. Yin and Yang. It takes dedication and paying attention to what works for us and what doesn’t work, but over time we learn to create our “space.”

In our own space we can breathe. We can feel the essence of life itself even amongst the pain. From here we can start to work towards deeper healing and insight into what we need to do to get to that next step and, eventually, step out of the pain. The body is capable of more than we give it credit for, but it requires the right space and a good bit of compassion for ourselves.

Sometimes the ground just won’t stop moving – we feel completely groundless. What do we do then? We lean into it. We learn to accept the shifting earth. We piece together the right people and tools to evolve and shift. To adapt. To sit in our space.

This is life. It never stops. Until it does – so, in the meantime, we have to show up for ourselves and be ready to do what is asked of us to create the necessary space in our lives socially, physically, and spiritually to heal. It may not be easy or feel very fair at times, but if it is what you are being asked to do then take a deep breath and find someone to help you find the way through. Start to build your space. From there you will remember the connection to it all.
