September brings a seasonal transformation from summer to autumn. This transition is a time when the energy of the summer, of full light and heat, that high, radiant yang energy begins to calm with the kiss of the energy of autumn, of coolness, of a moving inward, of a more yin-like energy. 

Especially if you are far enough North then the transformation is all around us in nature with the leaves changing colors and preparing to fall from the trees, the morning crispness in the air, and the days getting shorter. These are all signs of Mother Nature beginning to retreat towards an inward state of hibernation in preparation of the winter season. 

It can certainly take our body and, maybe more so, our mind a little while to adjust to the changing environment of shorter days and cooler weather. Times of transition like this can often leave us feeling uncertain or unbalanced. Not to mention that for many, this is a transitional time in day to day life also as many of us or members of our families are returning to work or study after the summer break.

It’s important for us to flow with the seasonal change rather than resist. What we practice on the mat can help us flow and transition with the season to live and maintain a sense of balance in body, mind, and spirit off the mat. This practice of flowing with the seasonal change will enable you to let go with the autumn season and release that which no longer serves you like the trees release their leaves to the autumn wind (this will be a core practice for autumn).

The work we did in last month’s Yoga with the Seasons calendar focused on exploring yin and yang energy in respect to what helps your body cultivate a sense of balance within yourself and stability in your connection with Nature. The intent of that was to help prepare you for the transitional time of this month. 

Think of this month as a month of preparation as you begin to settle down from the excitement, high energy, growth, and glow of the summer. Ever so slightly begin to turn your attention inward with the intention of fully returning to yourself and gathering up the bounty of your harvest, of the internal garden that you have been cultivating all these months.

Check in with where you have landed with your harvest after summer. 

We do this all in preparation of letting go of what does not support your balanced, healthy body and mind this autumn season… but more on that next month! 

As for now, this is a time of pause and reflection to gather your harvest and realize what you have been able to cultivate. This is an exciting time, as things begin to slow down, we realize the full bounty of our practice, and the journey inward for winter begins!
