Don’t Beat Yourself Up!..

Working with clients one-on-one I know that often after the holiday weekend some of us have the tendency to beat ourselves up for different food or drink related decisions. The beauty of this past holiday weekend is that I am sure it is the first of many for you now through the New Year heck who am I kidding, through Easter! What’s the beauty of that you are probably wondering?!? Whatever happened this weekend was a learning opportunity if you let it be for all the holiday functions ahead of you. Take a moment to pause & reflect on your weekend.  Imagine right now that I just sent you a text and said.. Hey “insert your name” take a moment to reflect on your holiday weekend, is there anything upon reflection that you would do different the next time you are in a similar situation (your future holiday events)?

  • Where are there opportunities for growth?
  • Modifications that could have been made?
  • Anything with portions, food selections, etc.?
  • Water that could have been consumed?
  • Activity that could have been included?

AND we can’t forget

  • What went well?!
  • What action are you proud of?!
  • What did you enjoy the most about the holiday?
  • What are you grateful for?

What would you text me back?!? PS. you can really put this into play by emailing me back. I would love to hear from you! [email protected]

Tips for Navigating through the holidays event after event:

AHEAD OF TIME:

  • It is always a great idea to explore ahead of time if there will be at least 1 nutritious options available. If you don’t already know, inquire. If there isn’t, bring a nutritious dish yourself so you know you have 1 nutritious go-to item!
  • Going to multiple events, take a second and think about which places have your favorites and then save having that particular dish only at the one place. For example, at my cousins house they have my favorite mac-n-cheese dish so I will skip mac-n-cheese dishes at other events and just have at my cousins.
  • Does the event start at an odd time or is the time off from when you would typically eat? If so, consider having a snack prior to help prevent getting to hungry and leading to hunger brain kicking in and overeating!
  • Don’t skip breakfast or any meal…that is basically just planning to overeat & indulge. You will be thankful you had fuel prior I promise : )

START YOUR DAY:

  • Plan to make time to start your day with some fitness whether it is 10 minutes or 60 minutes – set the healthy mindset for the day ahead! A quick workout will get those feel good endorphins moving and may help keep your hand out of the appetizers when you first arrive.

AT THE EVENT:

  • Consider making plans to play with kids after the meal –  tag, red rover, duck duck goose – to get yourself up & moving after the meal rather than continuing to graze!
  • Along the same lines, volunteer to help dish up the desserts after the meal or help clean up to keep yourself engaged rather than continuing to graze!
  • Use the smaller plates available to ensure good portion control. I have even had clients just use a napkin!
  • When plating your food try to use the plate visual of 1/2 of plate nonstarchy veggie, 1/4 plate starch, 1/4 protein.
  • Aim to add as much color to your plate as possible!
  • Before diving in & plating food, take a second to scan all your options & take a mental note on what you want to have & what you can/will skip. Same goes for the dessert table!
  • Set the intention to not go back for seconds!
  • If you like to try almost all dishes, plate a small 1 portion taste. After you have your plate of food, if you want more then consider going back for another portion.
  • If you plate a dish you have liked in the past or trying a new dish out, and you have a bite only to realize you do not enjoy, stop! Don’t eat it. Leave it behind on the plate. Don’t waste those precious calories on something you don’t enjoy
  • It is okay to say ‘No Thank’ kindly
  • Can’t leave out the cocktails! If you enjoy the richer cocktails with creams & sugar, I have 2 thoughts for you – consider making modifications to the ingredients to decrease the empty calories and/or enjoy & savor yourself 1 of your fav cocktail but after the one switch to a light cocktail/beer….and throw in the water in between!

Planning ahead, I like it! Come January 1 you will be set to focus on YOU! Limited spots available. Click here to claim your spot! Get excited!
